The Packing List: Essentials for Your Waikiki Glow

Pack like a pro for your Oʻahu getaway.

Packing for Waikiki is a little different than packing for anywhere else. Yes, you’ll want your swimsuits and sandals, but the real magic is in the small things that make your days easier, your skin happier, and your beach time feel effortless.

Here’s your Long Weekend approved packing list for a relaxed, bookish, sun-soaked stay in Oʻahu.

Reef-Safe Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable)

Hawaii’s sun is no joke. Most people already know to pack sunscreen. What a lot of travelers don’t realize is that Hawaii has also committed to protecting its reefs from harmful chemicals.

When you’re choosing sunscreen, make sure it’s ocean-safe. Two ingredients to avoid are:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate

Even better, Hawaii has banned the sale of sunscreens with these ingredients, so it’s easy to find the right kind when you arrive. If you’d rather save space in your luggage, you can pick some up after you land. There’s an ABC Superette right across the street from Long Weekend Waikiki.

What to bring:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (look for non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
  • SPF lip balm
  • Wide-brim hat or cap
  • Lightweight cover-up or linen shirt for extra sun protection

Skincare Pro’s Tip:
Apply sunscreen before you head out, not when you arrive at the beach. Let it fully absorb for 10–15 minutes, so it actually binds to your skin and gives you full protection. Once you get to the beach, you can hop straight into the ocean!

Beach-Day Essentials

Keep it simple, lightweight, and sand-friendly.

What to pack:

  • Reusable water bottle (hydration is key in the heat)
  • Quick-dry towel or sarong
  • Beach tote or packable bag
  • Flip flops or water-friendly sandals
  • Hair ties or claw clips for easy beach hair days

Tip: Beach towels that double as sarongs, reusable totes, and a beach umbrella are provided in the studio.

Your “Beach Read” Moment

If you’re a reader like me, this is when your trip shifts into reset mode.

Whether you’re a fast reader or like to take it slow, Waikiki is made for books in the sun, shade, and everywhere in between.

What to pack:

  • One easy, engaging beach read (romance, mystery, or something light and fun)
  • Kindle or e-reader if you like to travel light
  • A journal if you love capturing travel thoughts

And if you forgot a book? You’re covered! The studio also includes a curated Hawaiian-inspired library designed for slow, lazy moments between beach days.

Skincare That Travels Well

Keep it simple. Between sun, salt water, and island air, your skin routine should be minimal, not complicated.

What to bring:

  • Gentle cleanser (nothing too stripping)
  • Lightweight moisturizer or gel cream
  • After-sun soothing gel- Maui Vera’s After Sun Gel saved me when I got a sunburn mid-trip
  • Facial SPF for reapplication during the day

Skincare Pro’s Tip:
Think of this as a reset and not a routine. While you’re here, your skincare doesn’t need to be perfect. Keeping it calm, hydrated, and protected is enough. Double cleanse before bedtime if you’ve been in sunscreen and salt water all day. Your skin will thank you.

Vacation-Ready Clothing

Nothing makes you glow more than an outfit that makes you feel amazing.

What to bring:

  • 2–3 swimsuits you love
  • Lightweight dresses, shorts, or breathable sets
  • One slightly dressier outfit for dinner or sunset drinks
  • A light layer for breezy evenings
  • Comfortable walking sandals or hiking shoes (if hiking is in your plans)

Whether you’re a light packer or someone who brings the whole summer wardrobe, the studio has a full closet with hangers and a dresser for extra storage.

Tip: If you need to do laundry, the laundry room is located on the 8th floor.

The Long Weekend Mindset

This isn’t about overpacking—it’s about being present.

Present enough to walk a little slower.
Present enough to read one more chapter.
Present enough to come back from the beach and feel like you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

That’s the Long Weekend way.

This guide is inspired by years of helping clients feel confident in their skin before big trips, beach days, and long weekends away. If you’re looking for more simple, travel-friendly skincare tips, that’s exactly what I share over at Long Weekend Waxing & Skincare.
